Army Wives

Most people think living on an Army base is just about watching husbands and others go to war, keeping silent, and accepting this as necessary to reality.

Fortunately—or unfortunately—there’s more to it than that. Army life is not just about soldiers and their code of silence anymore. There is an all new code now, and it has been exposed in Army Wives, the highly acclaimed and most watched series on the Lifetime Network.

Why is this show so popular? Why do men enjoy Army Wives just as much as women do? Is it because the show is about real problems that soldiers and their families go through? Or is it because, the hard hitting truth that was hidden behind closed doors is now out in the open?

Everyone has their own opinion about the show and, personally, I absolutely love it—not just because I can relate to a few of the characters, but because it shows that people in the Army not only have to deal with Army life and all the rules and regulations it has, but they also have to manage the reality of life outside the military. Living on an Army base myself for almost two years, I found that it is difficult adjusting to being an average civilian outside the base. Both lives, however, are very nerve-racking and demanding, and trying to balance them both takes skill and patience. In the long run when you go back to living on a base or back to living as a civilian you miss little aspects and perks that each life had to offer. Also having lived on an Army base and watching the show, even though the show is fiction, I know it has a little sense of truth to it, meaning that some of the issues discussed I have either witnessed or overcame myself.

What would be the point of watching a show if all the issues exposed are sugar-coated and are oversaturated with clichés. If that is what you are looking for, then watch a soap opera. I myself would rather see the backstabbing, the gossip, and the pure unadulterated truth that comes with every episode along with the anxiety that builds up each week. Army Wives has the kind of “organic and untouched” portrayal of women that is ironically what women like to gossip and hear about, and men like to watch, and making it about soldiers wives makes the show all the more interesting.

All in all, Army Wives helps Americans understand what other Americans are going thru because of the war. Yeah your gas price may have gone up, but someone just lost a dad, a husband, brother, sister, or friend protecting the freedom that we all take for granted. So on a Sunday night when you have nothing to do, turn on the TV to the Lifetime channel and watch Army Wives and see how different and yet how similar your life and their lives actually are. Who knows you may become addicted to the show just like 9 million others who watch it religiously every week. I know because I’m one of them.

I can relate to this blog because myself having dated a Marine for almost 2 years I've had to experience the military life and the regular everyday civilian life. It's never easy to go from one life to the next. Dealing with all the stress having to watch someone you love leave to go fight for your life and everyone else's, knowing that they have a chance of not coming back is more terrifying than anything. Having to go back to daily life outside the base is hard because most people don't understand what you actually deal with emotionally and physically.

Reading your blog has definitely made me want to watch the show at least once to give it a try. I haven't taken the time to sit down and watch "Army Wives" because I thought it would probably be like all the other stupid soap operas out there. I get tired of watching things that are nothing like real life and you have opened my eyes and shown me that it is very honest and doesn't take the same path as other shows. I will let you know what I think about it in another comment after I watch it this Sunday night!
